Paul Duke (off-screen) says to US Senator George McGovern (D-SD), “We’ve had a proliferation of Senators seeking the Presidency in recent years but the only one who has succeeded in reaching the White House was John Kennedy. Barry Goldwater couldn’t do it. Gene McCarthy couldn’t do it. Birch Bayh, Lloyd Benson, Ed Muskie, Scoop Jackson, Frank Church, Howard Baker….all of them announced as candidates for the Presidency and didn’t make it. Why all these failures?”
