Atherosclerosis is a condition in which the inner walls of an artery develop plaques of a fatty substance called atheroma. This narrows the vessel and impairs blood flow, which can lead to heart attacks or strokes. The vessel can be widened again by implanting a stent, a mesh tube that holds the vessel open. This is inserted by passing a catheter into the narrowed vessel and inflating a balloon to push open the artery, then leaving the stent in place to maintain its shape
