David Levy warns of computer take over, AI and '1984'; 1979

David Levy, international Chess Master who plays against computers, speaking in 1979, warning the viewer on the possibility of artificial intelligence, computers becoming more intelligent than humans and '1984' scenario, referencing George Orwell's novel. "I think as times goes on, computer programs become far more generalised in their applications simply because people are now writing computer programs that can write computer programs. Now if you can teach a child to do something like play the piano and it eventually plays the piano better than its teacher, there is no reason why we cannot write computer programmes that can write computer programmes that are better than they are. And since computers are already at the stage where they are designing computers that are better than they are, if you put the two together you have a, sort of, 1984 outlook which is actually very realistic, although it may seem far-fetched at the moment.
