WASHINGTON, : US President Bill Clinton (L) embraces Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) after announcing a new report on the effectiveness of the national instant check system for gun purchasers in an East Room ceremony at the White House 15 March 2000. McCarthy's husband Dennis was killed and her son Kevin wounded in a mass shooting on the Long Island Railroad 07 December 1993. Since then she has been a strong advocate of gun control.
