Enslaved By Debt - Guarani Indians In Bolivia
CHUQUISACA, BOLIVIA - FEBRUARY 8: An unidentified Guarani mother holding her two kids February 8, 2007 in the Chuquisaca district in Bolivia. 6000 Guarani indians still live enslaved by debt in Bolivia. The Guaranis are forced to live on the hacienda owners' land, working in fields that are not their own and without getting paid much. Since they seldomly have time to grow crops themselves, they receive food from the haciendados, the Spanish word for the big landowners . But the haciendados will deduct money for rent and food from their meager pay resulting in the Guaranis actually owing money to their haciendados. In this way the Guaranis have been kept as debt slaves for generations. (Photo by David Hogsholt/Getty Images)
