College athletics director calls for governance structure, clean recruitment as name image likeness compensation laws considered

University of Mississippi Intercollegiate Athletics Vice Chancellor Keith Carter says in his opening statement at a Senate Commerce Committee hearing to evaluate a framework for paying college athletes that he took great pride in listening to student athletes as athletic director at his alma mater, often getting questions about the opportunity to benefit from name image and likeness in a way non-athlete classmates did, asking what the model might look like, obviously complex with potential unintended consequences and lasting ripple effects, also vitally important that a governance structure be formed around federal legislation to ensure that each state and therefore it university at a uniform framework the focus on education and the unique appeal of the current amateur model, to ensure that student athletes remain to students and athletics did not become pay for play or essentially another professional league, going on to say the preferred denial system evolved third-party compensation only and another important component of new legislation must ensure that opportunities were kept out of recruiting.
