Terry Jones talks passionately about real ale; 1984

Terry Jones, speaking in 1984, on the differences between real ale and commercially produced beer and lager. "The keg stuff is kind of, err, a corpse that's been revived with gas whereas real ale is this living thing. It has a life cycle of its own and it goes through this cycle and it has to be looked after and care for you know. That's why it's always different and sometimes it's bad and sometimes it's good. But again, it's actually anarchy in practice because you can't make real ale on a huge scale because as soon as you do, you have to filter it, take all of the yeast out. You have to sterilise it so it doesn't work anymore, it becomes flat and then you have to put it in anaerobic conditions, seal it up and then you have to put gas into it to make it look like it's fizzy so you change a thing whereas real beer can only be made on a small scale so it's kind of an anarchy thing there in a way."
