Last summer thousands of refugees and migrants were using the so-called ‘Balkans route’ every day in the largest migration of people since the Second World War. The route was closed in the spring of 2016 after a number of countries, including Hungary built fences and closed their borders and also after the EU negotiated a deal with Turkey to stem the flow across the Aegean.
