CLEAN:Flagellation ceremonies mark Islamic anniversary in Afghanistan
Devout Shiites in Afghanistan have been taking part in a self, flagellation ceremony on Friday, as part of an important religious festival. Dozens of worshippers gathered at a shrine in central Kabul to whip themselves with metal chains as part of a ceremony to commemorate the death of Hassan ibn Ali, the grandson of the prophet Mohammed who died in the seventh century. Though self, harm is forbidden in Islam, certain Shia sects incorporate the practice into some specific ritual celebrations. (Footage by AFPTV via Getty Images)
