Keren is the second largest city in Eritrea and is known for being a major hub for trade in vegetables and livestock. Goods produced in the Gash-Barka region to the southwest pass through Keren before heading to Asmara to the east. The city has an estimated population of 120,000 people who are predominately Muslim by faith with Catholic and Orthodox practitioners as well. Keren is also sight of the pivotal world war II battle between British Army and Commonwealth forces and the Italian forces that occupied Eritrea during the 1940's which resulted in a decisive victory for the British which eventually led to the end of the Italian fascist occupation of Eritrea.
