URUGUAY-ECONOMY-PROTEST

Thousands of protesters march 16 April, 2002, in Montevideo during a demonstration called "Because Another Uruguay is Possible." The march was called for by workers and businesmen to protest the nation's economic crisis. Uruguay is in its fourth year or recession with 14.4 percent unemployment, and a national deficit at 4 percent of the gross national product. The government of President Jorge Batlle is implementing drastic economic measures that include cuts in state salaries and tax increases. La protesta se realiza contra la politica economica liberal y aperturista del gobierno, en reclamo de empleo y de soluciones para la produccion.
