Scottish Capital

circa 1950: The city of Edinburgh seen from the battlements of the Edinburgh Castle. There is evidence of Iron Age settlement in Edinburgh and the old part of the city developed around the castle within the protective Flodden Wall. The new town was begun in 1767 to create space for the expanding population and much of it was built in the Georgian style which was prevalent at the time. The city hosts the Military tattoo and the Edinburgh Festival every year and is a popular tourist resort. (Photo by George Pickow/Three Lions/Getty Images)
