A little girl in her mothers' arms cast a vote at a polling station in Paris for the October 21, 1945 constituent election in France, summoned firstly to elect new MPs and secondly to authorise, via a referendum, the elected National Assembly to draft a new constitution. For the first time women could be candidates at a general election and 33 of them were elected to parliament. The French Communist Party came out on top with around 26% of the vote.
