An Encounter With Asylum Seekers Stuck In Limbo In Indonesia

BATAM, INDONESIA - SEPTEMBER 05: Abdul Hamid (L), a refugee from Sudan displays a map of Sudan on his smartphone inside a temporary tent in the city park next to the regional parliament building for the city of Batam on September 5, 2016 in Batam, Indonesia. Dozens of asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Sudan, Somalia and Pakistan have been forced to sleep in front of the regional parliament building at night as they wait for registration and resettlement. In the midst of the global refugee crisis, over 13,500 refugees and asylum seekers are known to have settled in Indonesia as of April 2016, a majority in Jakarta while the remainder in cities like Makassar, Medan and Batam. Although considered a small number among the 65 million people who had been forced to leave their homes due to war and persecutions in 2015, the numbers of asylum seekers taking Indonesia as their new homes continue to grow as they get stuck in limbo while seeking asylum in countries like Australia and New Zealand. As Indonesia finds itself hosting a growing number of asylum seekers from war torn countries like Afghanistan, Sudan and Somalia, these refugees grow fatigue within their settlements without being able to legally work, leave their shelters or gain citizenship while being caught in the middle.
