Basílica di San Miniato al Monte - Stock-Fotografie

Situated at the highest point of Florence, the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, whose construction began in 1013, it is considered the most beautiful Romanesque structure in Tuscany and one of the most beautiful churches of Italy. It began as a Benedictine monastery, but today is the Olivetan monks. The facade is one of the masterpieces in marble and geometric plot divided into two main segments: the bottom, characterized by five arches supported by green serpentine columns with bases and Corinthian capitals in white marble. On the top, the two symmetrical gables of the corridors are decorated with two colors of white and green marble. The central part of the second level is characterized by a gantry supported by four columns that are divided into three parts. In the center of the porch there is a window framed by two columns, on which we see the mosaic of Christ between the Virgin and San Miniato, which was composed in 1260.The pediment, finally, reflects the style of the first order with a series of nine green and white arches topped by a cross and candlesticks. The upper parts date back to at least the twelfth century. In 1530, during the siege of Florence, it was used as artillery post and Michelangelo ordered that if they put mattresses around so that it was protected from enemy fire. The ship's center is dominated by the beautiful Cappella del Crocefisso, designed by Michelozzo in 1448 and decorated with frescoes by Agnolo Gaddi and decorative terracotta della Robbia Luca. The upper altar supposedly contains the bones of St. Miniato, the first martyr of Florence, possibly a Greek merchant or an Armenian prince, who left his home to make a pilgrimage to Rome. We arrived in Florence in 250 AD and became a hermit. It was beheaded during the anti-Christian persecutions of the Emperor Decius.
