Local African American Group Wants Confederate Plaque Relocated
CHARLES TOWN, WV -SEP 26: Linda Downing Ballard is one of the concerned women in Charles Town who is offended by the plaque (at left) that honors Confederate soldiers. -A group of African American women are calling for the removal of a plaque related to the Confederacy in the Civil War. Oddly this plaque only went up a couple of decades ago, soon after West Virginia approved Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a holiday in 1986. Now the women want it down or relocated from the Jefferson County Courthouse entrance. The council has voted to keep it up, they are all white. Photo by Michael S.
